The Chalk Beneath Our Vines
Our site lies on the North Downs chalk, which is part of the same continuous chalk geology found in the Champagne region. The chalk soils of the North Downs are ideal for producing sparkling wine. Chalk drains well, retains moisture in dry periods, and reflects heat back to the vines, helping grapes ripen slowly while keeping their natural acidity — a key requirement for high-quality sparkling wine.
Roman coins uncovered in the vineyard offer a possible link to its Roman past. As the Romans are known to have planted vines in England and on the same chalk belt in the Champagne region, it is possible that vine cultivation also formed part of the agricultural life of this land.
